Re: Panic buying
"Customs all over Europe are fucking with British goods and changing their requirements on a daily basis." is probably the only Brexit relayed input to all this - and it will require an EU directive, not a UK one - to address the causes.

At the moment such actions simply add to the logistics problems by taking up space in transport to return the goods to sender.

We shall see how eager they are to address this part of the problem in due time: looks exactly like a petulant sulk to me though.

Logistics and the whole supply chain was always at risk, both from Covid closing big Chinese ports then the Suez Canal being blocked; the echoes from both are still resonating around the world, overlaying and highlighting any local issues that may, up until now, have been masked.

One thing is for certain though: allowing slave-waged labour to flood back into the country to "help clear the logistics log-jam" is NOT the solution - it's a significant part of the problem.

Re: Panic buying
I work in logistics and it’s a shit show out there, no warehouse space because online sellers in particular doubled down on their orders after massive peak when everyone was at home slinking their furlough.

Web sales are currently weaker than normal and they have all this excess stock, which has to go somewhere, the fulfilment warehouses don’t want storage as margins are so thin, they need goods in and out. Plus the warehouses can’t get the staff for seasonal peak.

The carriers, DPD, Parcelforce, Fed ex DHL, UPS etc are struggling for drivers so they are using subbies who are often slow as fuck, unprofessional, and can be dishonest shall we say. I know that one carrier in particular has 100’s of criminal cases against Subbie drivers at the moment.

The ports are fucked and blocked and now out of storage, the port fees have gone through the roof and container price at 4-5 times that of normal.

Air freight is sorting itself out as more planes are in the sky but becoming overloaded.

There aren’t enough customs officials to clear the goods. Unless commercial invoices are perfect goods returned to sender. Customs all over Europe are fucking with British goods and changing their requirements on a daily basis.

100k short of HGV drivers and all normal delivery drivers want an uplift in their pay.

No one wants to pay any more for anything and there is a point when it’s not worth importing the goods anymore as the profitable price is more than people will pay.

Absolute fucking shit show.

1 bit of advice for anyone shipping goods, do not assume your items are covered for loss or damage. Unless you specify full cover when you buy your label you get carriers limited liability which is usually fuck all.

The amount of stories I hear of people paying £9 for a label and sending a £2k guitar or something that they have just put some bubble wrap round only to find that £9 amazingly didn’t cover them for £2 fucking grand when their guitar gets smashed to bits or whatever. It’s unreal.

Over the festive season it’s gonna be shocking,

RB

Our HQ is in California, apparently they changed the rules so no trucks prior to 11 plates are allowed at the ports and no driver-operators (non-union) are allowed.

Re: Panic buying
Spoken with a mate who runs a haulage company in Illinois. Have about 40-50 drivers. Saying it’s costing over 100k plus a month in storage cost alone. Got the drivers. Got the trucks. Ain’t got the trailers that hold the trailers. Saying the ports and authorities knew about this long before any pandemic reared it’s ugly head. Was happy to kick the can down the road. And hope it was somebody else’s problem. Chickens coming home. And all that.

No shortage of anything in Costco yesterday although prices have gone up, plus their petrol pumps hardly had anyone there filling up.

Re: Panic buying
I ordered an electric push bike in February this year. Its not widely available and made by a small Spanish manufacturer and has one UK main dealer based in London. He said order it now and they'll arrive in June. So I did. In between I looked at general availability of other more mainstream bikes and there wasn't much. It arrived in July. He said he got 90 bikes not the 30 ordered but was told he definitely won't see any more for at least six months. On top of that prices were going up at least 25%. This is all because all the main parts for all bikes come from a couple of manufacturers in china.
When there is a perceived shortage you get a wave of ordering that might not happen in a JIT supply line working well. So then you get a sine wave of supply and buying. There will be no obvious end to this until supply is dramatically upped.

"Christmas shopping is gonna be like Arnie in ‘jingle all the way’."

For idiots it will be. We've all been told there's a global shortage and to buy early, so been given enough time to sort stuff out.

I've just spent the last day or so ordering pretty much every present I need for people from Amazon so I'm pretty much done.

Re: Panic buying
I saw two reports from the US yesterday, they are experiencing exactly the same thing as the UK and Europe, shortage of delivery drivers, ships unable to unload or dock at ports, empty shelves in supermarkets, soaring price of everything, including fuel, forecasts of shopping armageddon for Christmas, panic buying of bog rolls.

I guess it's what happens if you shut down the economy and then start it up again. Or maybe it's all down to Brexit after all.

If you want to make a few quid, buy up a load of 'must have toys' now, and sell them at 3/4 times the price in December.

Re: Panic buying
I see the remainers spokespersons are now trying to get the kids to push their cause to allow slave-labour-waged drivers back into the UK under the threat of they may not get the toys they want for Christmas.

Nothing about the Chinese not being able to make and ship them, but, apparently, everything is stuck in Felixstowe, and that's the sole reason their Xmas will be fucked.

Should be interesting.
